History of Pointe-à-Pitre

The history of Pointe-à-Pitre begins in the 18th century, when this port city was founded in the bay of Petit Cul-de-Sac Marin. Thanks to its strategic location, it quickly became a major economic center in Guadeloupe, fostering trade in sugar, coffee, and rum. Despite the fires, cyclones, and earthquakes that have marked its development, Pointe-à-Pitre has managed to rebuild itself and maintain its central role in the archipelago.

In the 19th century, Pointe-à-Pitre’s history was enriched by industrial development and the growth of its port, which made it an essential crossroads of the French West Indies. The city is distinguished by its architectural heritage, notably the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and the City Hall, testaments to its resilience in the face of natural disasters.

Today, the history of Pointe-à-Pitre lives on through its museums, colourful markets, and vibrant cultural scene. As the economic capital of Guadeloupe, it embodies the meeting of Creole tradition and modernity, attracting travellers and history enthusiasts eager to discover the rich past of the Antilles.
