William Penn, an English Quaker founded Philadelphia in 1682. Initially, it was to serve as the capital of the Pennsylvania Colony of the British Empire. Then, this city played an instrumental role in the American Revolution, as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the United States of America Constitution in 1787.
Furthermore, the First and Second Continental Congresses were held here at Independence Hall. Philadelphia also served as the temporary capital of the United States from 1790-1800.
