William Penn, an English Quaker, founded Philadelphia in 1682. Initially, it was to serve as the capital of the Pennsylvania Colony of the British Empire. The city also played an instrumental role in the American Revolution as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers, who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the United States Constitution in 1787.
The First and Second Continental Congresses were also held here at Independence Hall. Philadelphia also served as the United States’ temporary capital from 1790 to 1800.
