Ancient History

Milan, originally known as Medhelanon, was founded around 590 BCE by the Celtic Insubres tribe. The city’s strategic location in the Po Valley, surrounded by rivers, made it an ideal settlement. The Romans conquered Milan in 222 BCE and renamed it Mediolanum. Under Roman rule, Milan flourished and became a significant political and economic center.

During the late antiquity, Milan served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The city faced numerous invasions, including those by Attila the Hun and the Goths, but it managed to recover and thrive. By the 10th century, Milan experienced a resurgence in vitality, particularly under the Carolingians.

In the medieval period, Milan became one of the largest European cities and a major trade and commercial hub. The city played a crucial role during the Renaissance as the capital of the Duchy of Milan, influencing politics, art, and fashion. Milan’s rich history continued to evolve, eventually becoming a key center during the Italian Enlightenment and the Restoration.

Modern History

Since the Restoration in the early 19th century, Milan has undergone significant transformations. After the fall of Napoleon, Milan became part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia under Austrian rule. The city played a crucial role in the Italian unification movement, with the Five Days of Milan in 1848 marking a significant uprising against Austrian control. Milan was eventually incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The city rapidly industrialized, becoming a major economic and cultural center. During World War II, Milan suffered extensive damage from Allied bombings, but it was rebuilt and experienced a post-war economic boom, solidifying its status as Italy’s financial capital.

In the latter half of the 20th century, Milan continued to grow as a global fashion and design hub. The city hosted the 2015 World Expo, which further boosted its international profile. Today, Milan is known for its vibrant cultural scene, historic landmarks, and thriving economy. It remains a key player in global finance, fashion, and design, attracting millions of visitors each year.
