History

Brussel was founded in 979 by Charles de Basse-Lotharingia. It, therefore, celebrated its millennium in 1979. However, there are megalithic and Roman remains that obviously predate that.

The city developed on three sites (along the Senne and on a nearby hill). The first 4 km rampart was completed in the 13th century. It was then enlarged to 8 km.

Brussels fell under Spain’s control, then under Austrian reign (Habsburgs) after the Nine Years War. The Brabant revolution of 1789-1790 led to the independence of Belgium. The French Revolution of 1789 saw Belgium annexed to France but the fall of Napoleon liberated it in 1815.

Since 1830 Brussels has been the capital of Belgium.

The Brussels Tourist Scavenger Hunt is available to Beta-test for free, in French.
